Tara Geraci (Manor Care of Lacey) and De Ann Johnson (Dispatch Health) – both Board members of the Senior Action Network – spearheaded a Christmas giving program for our local Meals On Wheels recipients this past December. Raising funds for our local seniors while spreading a little holiday cheer, local senior living facilities and other members of SAN decorated Christmas ornaments as gifts to accompany meals delivered before Christmas. Patients and residents at ManorCare-Lacey, Dispatch Health, Brookdale East, Fieldstone Olympia, Patriots Landing, The Firs, Garden Courte Memory Care, Affinity of Olympia and Memory Care at The Lodges all decorated over 600 beautifully hand-crafted ornaments for those who receive Meals on Wheels in our community!
Not only did this giving program bring joy to those receiving the ornaments, but the residents, staff and patients at the various facilities were happy to be able to give back to their area neighbors who might have been feeling isolated during the holidays. This holiday gift program helped those seniors isolated at home feel the love from their community, while letting them know they are not alone or forgotten.
Meals on Wheels in Thurston County loved the collaboration in December, as their deliveries almost tripled over the last 9 months of 2020 with demand exceeding all predictions. Over 15,000 meals were prepared in December alone in the organization’s combined kitchens!! Additionally, since COVID-19 hit us last March, the number of seniors served in Mason and Thurston counties has more than doubled! Due to the generosity of our local community (as well as federal grants awarded during the pandemic) Senior Services of South Sound has to date managed to fund this expanded need for assistance: however, as we move into 2021 no one knows what amount (if any) of federal funds will be made available. The Meals on Wheels programs are counting on the continued support of our community! To donate, go to their website at: https://southsoundseniors.org.
